Eat This Not That

How many times have you heard it’s unhealthy to eat a certain food or food group. Then a new study comes out telling you that the food group or food is healthy. You have to be confused by now.

I’d like to clear up the issue about fats. In 1988 the Department of Health and Human Services and in 1996 the American Heart Association and 1997 the American diabetic Association all have recommended a low-fat diet to prevent and treat obesity and all the chronic health problems associated with obesity.

This was based on shoddy science, in fact there was no science other than fat has more calories per gram then carbohydrates.

The problem was compounded by political lobbyists.

By shifting our food towards carbohydrates and reducing fats is the cause the obesity epidemic.  Because of the obesity epidemic, for the 1st time in history of the human species life expectancy is declining. The children of this generation will of sicker and die younger than their parents. Case in point, type II diabetes is no longer called adult onset because many of our children have type II diabetes.

Dietary fat are necessary for every cell membrane of the body. It’s also important for the proper function of the brain and spinal cord. The absorption of fat soluble vitamins, blood clotting, muscle movement and to decrease inflammation are all functions of the proper dietary fats. Fats are also necessary for all sex hormone production.

Monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, and trans fats.

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are healthy fats.

The saturated fats should be limited in our diet and the complete avoidance of trans fats.

Trans fats are not found in nature therefore our body cannot process them properly. They are very pro-inflammatory.

Saturated fats are found in animal meat.

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are vegetable oils.

You’re probably saying you’re in good shape since you use canola oil. Canola oil is a highly manufactured product that actually has higher levels of trans fats then soybean oil. During the manufacture of canola oil there is over a dozen chemical stages to process canola oil so would not go rancid . By the way corn is a genetically modified food as is soybean oil.

Healthy oils that are readily available which include; olive, nut and avocado oil. Fatty fish is also a source of healthy oils such as salmon, and mackerel. Large fish such is tuna also contain healthy fats however contain heavy metals which are detrimental to our health. Large fish should be eaten sparingly to avoid heavy metal toxicity.
