Type 2 Diabetes
Recently I googled the most google medical conditions. The second on the list was, “what are the symptoms of diabetes.” In medical textbooks diabetes is known as a masquerade of many diseases. Type 2 diabetes presents with a wide range of symptoms shared by other conditions. Part of the reason for this is that carbohydrates play a central role in the function of every cell in the body, and particularly the brain.
The proper diagnosis should start at the consultation, where signs and symptoms can be identified. Diet and lifestyle issues should be also discussed at consultation. More importantly there are the laboratory tests. A differential diagnosis must be performed to rule out other conditions with the same symptoms as type 2 diabetes. The common tests are fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C. The fasting blood sugar is how much sugar is in your blood at the time of the test and hemoglobin A1C is an average of the level of sugar in your blood for the past 120 days.
There is a 3rd test which is serum insulin which is important.. Insulin is the hormone released in the blood to move sugar out of the blood and into the cells. In type 2 diabetes this hormone is either not effective or not enough has been released into the blood. If you’re fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C is high, it’s important to know how much insulin has been released in the blood. Depending on the number of these indices if insulin is high, it is known as insulin resistance. If insulin is low the problem lies within the pancreas. Low levels of insulin can be confused with type 1 diabetes and a differential diagnosis is needed.
Type 2 diabetes is completely dependent on lifestyle. With diligent focus on diet and other factors of lifestyle this condition can be reversed. There are supplements that can assist in reversing this condition. MetaGlycemX and Insulin Guard, from Metagenics can be helpful.
