Why do so many people take Turmmeric?
Today’s supplement spotlight is turmeric. The active ingredient of turmeric is curcumin. To date there have been no drug interactions or side effects. However, it should not be taken when pregnant.
Curcumin Is a strong antioxidant preventing the body from free radical damage. It has also been found to decrease inflammation by reducing histamine levels. It increases natural cortisone released from the adrenal glands which also decreases inflammation. Curcumin protects the liver from toxic chemicals and reduces platelet clumping which can improve circulation. This supplement was used extensively during the COVID pandemic.
It is my opinion, if you are taking an anticoagulation medication such as Plavix, I would speak to your doctor regarding taking turmeric since it affects platelets similarly to Plavix which may alter laboratory tests assessing the effectiveness of Plavix or other anticoagulation medications.
Aside from this concern is an excellent anti-inflammatory that should be a part of your “toolbox “when necessary.
