Can exercise an anti-inflammatories fend off aging.
On Monday January 19, 2026, NPR reported “Can exercise and anti inflammatories fend off aging.” The study is headed by Dr Thomas Marron who directs clinical trials at the Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He explains as result of aging chronic inflammation develops. This is termed inflammaging.
This may seem a bit self-aggrandizing however, this has been under investigation for over 20 years in the functional medical community and other researchers around the world. Inflammaging comes out of the functional medical community. I’m glad it’s finally getting some recognition in the United States. Sorry, I just had say that for all the negative feedback over the years.
I would like to clarify something that is not mentioned in this NPR report. The exercise is High Intensity Interval Training which includes short bursts of cardio mixed with resistance training. This must be defined very clearly in order to prevent injuries and at worse cardiovascular events.
Classically there are two ways to make sure interval training will be effective and not cause harm. The first may be a little confusing mathematical calculation.
220-your age=X X time 80% and X times 40% This gives you the range of your heart rate during exercise. Here’s an example; 220 -50 = 170 170 X.8 =136 and 170 X.4 = 68
During exercise your heart rate at age 50 should be between 136 and 68 beats per minute.
The much simpler way to make sure your heart rate is correct for your age. You should be able to talk while you’re exercising.
As part of the research some participants will be receiving a supplement called spermidine which has shown to be anti-inflammatory.
Exercise is imperative in lower inflammation. However, extreme exercise can be inflammatory. Make sure that you talk with your doctor or cardiologist before starting any exercise program.
There are also numerous ways of decreasing inflammation from a proper daily dental program to balancing the gut microbiome.
