Supplements spotlight is EGEC
Today’s supplement spotlight is EGEC, (epigallocatechin). EGEC is found in green, black and oolong teas. Black and oolong tea are fermented and loses some of its health benefits. EGEC tea is not fermented and retains health benefits.
You might have heard of the “new health buzzword,” polyphenol. EGEC is a polyphenol- catechin. EGEC enhances the immune system in several ways. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory that prevents oxidation of cholesterol which may prevent cardiovascular disease. It also supports healthy gut bacteria. A natural anti-inflammatory/antioxidant supplement that enhances gut bacteria may seem to have limited health benefits. Consider all the oxidative reactions in the body including damage to DNA which has negative health ramifications. There is a growing wealth of information on the need for healthy gut bacteria that affects the health of entire body, physical and mental. It has been reported that there is more information on “health talk between cells “from the gut bacteria than the brain. All chronic diseases; cardiovascular, type 2 diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, and metabolic syndrome and others can benefit from this supplement/tea. This is not an end all in treating these maladies. It is part of an integrated approach.
As with all supplements, more is not better. Over 800 mg of EGEC daily has been linked to liver damage.
EGEC decreases the effectiveness of nadolol and warfarin.
