Your health is important to enjoy the summer

The common thread for improving health, longevity and a healthy immune system is making improvements in lifestyle choices. Don’t you hate to hear that. I recognize that changing one’s lifestyle is not what we want to hear. In my past emails I explained what these changes are, and I understand that they can be confusing and almost impossible to achieve for most of us. To keep it simple and doable, here are 9 recommendations.

  • Nutrition “food is medicine” try to follow a Mediterranean diet.
  • Dramatically reduce sugar, starch, and processed foods.
  • Exercise, aerobic and resistance training; 20 minutes 6 days a week. Pick activities that you like.  Be inventive, change activities frequently. It does not have to be a “gym class.” MOVE.
  • Sleep, for adult 7 hours.
  • Meditate.
  • Intermediate fasting. 12 hours is doable and sufficient. As an example, if your last meal of the day is between 7 and 8:00 at night, breakfast should be between 7 and 8:00 in the morning.
  • Purpose/mission/community, Get involved in other than yourself.
  • Supplements.  I find that most of my patients are taking some sort of supplements. It is especially important that you be informed of what you are taking and why as well as the quality of the supplements.
