Chiropractic versus Functional Medicine
Many of you have been thinking that functional medicine and chiropractic are two separate and distinct medical specialties. To understand the interlinking between chiropractic and functional medicine you first must understand that functional medicine is not a treatment, it Is a way of thinking very much like chiropractic. Both look at a patient with a global view, trying to find the root cause of the problem, root cause-an overused and misused term. In the past as functional medicine was developing it was called looking upstream, now root cause.
For instance, when a patient comes in with the diagnosis from another practitioner of arthritis of the knee, with failed attempts at physical therapy and pharmaceuticals, I ask a simple question, when you get up in the morning how does your arthritis feel. The answer almost inevitably is I can hardly move or something to that effect. I ask a follow-up question; how does your arthritis feel during the day. Almost inevitably, it feels much better. I will ask a third question; If I took an X-ray of your knee in the morning and again in the afternoon will arthritis show up in the morning and not in the afternoon? Most people don’t understand. Or is it function? Arthritis doesn’t just happen, there is a cause.
Trying to find out what’s going on, both disciplines ask the same questions. History of trauma, overuse, activities that aggravate the condition and many other questions. Knowing that inflammation is the problem with arthritis and many other conditions, questions are asked about gut health, diet, stress levels, quality of sleep, toxic exposure, family history, level of energy. In the chiropractic physical examination of we examine something called the kinetic chain. We evaluate the function of the joints above and below as well as the function of the joint in question. There is no line between functional medicine and chiropractic, it is a way of thinking, finding what is going on.
Chiropractic physical treatment improves joint function and balance. Often, I may temporarily prescribe MyoCalm Plus for muscle spasms. Kaprex for joint discomfort, or SPM Active that targets the body’s Inflammatory stress signals. All are superior in pain relief with much greater safety than pharmaceuticals. Commonly results are seen in two weeks except for MyoCalm which is effective within one hour or less. All three are Metagenics products. Metagenics has a special offer of 30% off first-time metagenes orders with free shipping until December 31st, 2025.
