How to minimize degenerative disk disease

If you had x-rays of your spine, especially your lumbar spine, the doctor may have told you that you have degenerative disk disease. This is a common finding for people over 40 years old. Degenerative disk is almost always associated with arthritis in the spine. You may or may not have symptoms from degenerative disk disease, however the function of the spine has been compromised.

The disk provides a cushion between the vertebrae, more importantly it provides movement between the vertebrae and provides a space for the nerves to exit the spine. Because of pressure that exists in the discs there are no blood vessels that enter the disk. The disk is living tissue and needs oxygen and nutrients to stay healthy. There are blood vessels (capillaries) in the cartilage above and below the disk and around the outside of the disk. Oxygen and nutrients enters the disk by changes in disk pressure that occurred during movement, like a pumping effect. Movement of the spine is necessary for a fluid exchange between the capillaries and the disks. If this movement is not adequate the disks start to break down. This results in a decrease in cushion effect and in narrowing of the space where nerves exit the spine.

Chiropractic procedures evaluate the movement between each vertebra. Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy is designed specifically to restore the normal movement between vertebrae which restores the pumping effect to nourish the disks. Chiropractic manipulation can prevent further degeneration. Of course, the sooner you address the problem the better the results.

Another factor in disk degeneration is proper nutrition. Joe Kondama, M.D, PhD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics, was the lead author in a literature review of 126 medical studies that show a link between specific nutrients and disc health. This paper was published in the North American Spine Society Journal.

The key nutrients found in Dr. Kondama paper as well as other studies found that Zink, Selenium, Copper, Manganese Citrate, D-Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin Sulfate, and MSN were necessary for disc health.

All of these can be found in one tablet from Metagenics called ChonderCare. This supplement is also prescribed for cartilage injuries in other joints…
